Some men carry rank. Others carry responsibility. A rare few carry the burden of a nation.
Major General Rabe Abubakar was one of those few.
For over three decades, he served Nigeria with humility, courage, and unwavering dedication. Soft-spoken yet resolute, he earned not just authority but the respect of colleagues, soldiers, and citizens alike.
As a military spokesman, he became the voice of countless troops, explaining operations, honoring sacrifices, and responding when the nation demanded answers. For years, he spoke for others.
Tragically, his final days were spent in captivity, enduring circumstances no citizen should face, especially a man who devoted his life to protecting others. His death raises difficult questions about insecurity, kidnapping and the responsibilities of institutions in times of crisis.
But beyond those questions was a man of character, a husband, father, comrade, gentleman, patriot and proud Nigerian. He transcended ethnic and regional divides, earning admiration through integrity and service.
Like a porcupine, he was gentle by nature yet carried a quiet strength that left a lasting impact. His life, sacrifice, and legacy will continue to challenge the conscience of the nation long after the headlines fade.
Rest well, Major General Rabe Abubakar.
The soldier’s watch has ended, but the lessons of his service endure. May his memory inspire Nigeria’s continued fight against banditry and terrorism, and may his example never be forgotten.
